Getting a genuine Sony battery is a feat on its own. The internal battery might be dead too and not be able to recharge properly. Though that might not cause any practial problems seeing that the main battery is always inserted.

I still have the original battery for my 1000. It doesn't last very long at all (around 4 hours, it used to be six or seven), and I've had it for around four or five years.

I have one that is in great condition aside from the screen having minor scratches. But if you know how to install faceplates then that shouldnt be a problem.
