PSP newbie with noobish questions

[EDIT: November 25, 2007 NEW QUESTIONs:

Question #1: Exactly how can I save all the information from my 4GB Pro Duo ms & be able to re-install it onto a different 4GB ms? I have two seperate memory sticks that I'd like to "backup" or duplicate. One of them is my "Magic ms" to use with my Pandora battery. x3sphere said, "Yes you can back up all files from a magic MS. Just remember that after copying the files to a new MS, you will need to run msinst and write "msipl.bin" to the new MS as well." Would I do the same thing for any memory stick I want to save to my computer & load to another ms? I've never heard of "run msinst" or "msipl.bin" so would someone help me out & explain to me what to do?

Question #2: How can multiple (small) downloads be combined into their original size & then used? What I mean is that a large file had to somehow be broken up into a bunch of smaller (100mb) pieces & uploaded. Now I want to download everything & put them back together to create the original single & large file. I have WinRAR if that helps, but don't know how to use it for anything other than straightforward opening of single files.

Question #3: Isn't this CLICK HERE a much simpler & better way of creating a Pandora's battery & Magic memory stick? It works for Slim batteries & doesn't require any DOS commands. Any reason to keep using the instructions in Using The Universal Unbricker To Unbrick / Downgrade / Restore Any PSP To 3.71 M33-2?

[EDIT: November 15th, 2007 NEW QUESTION:
I need recommendations (preferably from personal experience) for a way that I can send & receive large (300MB to 1.7GB) files to & from my friends (not just upload something for the whole world to have access to). I'm trying to avoid "p2p" or peer-to-peer / person to person type of situations (like Limewire) because I've heard horror stories about viruses, spyware, & worse things wrecking computers when using things like that. Then again, I will listen if someone here has had very good experiences (personally) with that type of thing, so feel free to let me know.

While I wait for replies I'll list what I've found in my Google search. Please give your opinions of them:

I found an interesting website called Diino that has quite a few very nice features. There is a completely free membership that gives you 2GB of online storage space for absalutely any type of file. 2GB seems small, but I could make it work for my simple needs (5GB, 10 GB & up require payment). There are a bunch of other included features like secure email, stream your backup / uploaded MP3 music to any PC, own your own BLOG & access it from any PC or your phone,& scheduled automatic backup (to name just a few), but what I'm most interested in is their Authorized File Sharing.

esnips.comoffers 5GB of free space. I haven't had a chance to look into it much. Has anyone here heard of it or use it? What do you think of it?

Badongo.com offers 1GB of free space and a type of "authorized file sharing". What makes Badongo interesting is their Badongo Buddy(free upload / download tool) that promises to simplify merging files when necessary (as well as other benefits I don't yet understand). Let me know what you think of this one.

UploadHut.com offers 1GB of free space. I think it gives you the web link to your uploaded file (after your upload is complete). You then have to give that web link or address to whomoever you want to access it.

http://www.upload.th.la/ OK, this one showed up on a Google search with barely any description. I just included it here since it was one of the very few that gives 1GB of space.

--------Below is the actual original post; which can now be ignored since the questions have been answered---Thanks guys!--------
I just got my very first PSP (original "phat") console & would like to get involved with custom firmware, etc. My problem is that I'm terrified of bricking my new toy. Quite frankly everything I read takes me back to the days when I failed horribly at learning DOS. Everything reads like techno-babble to me. Things like "place such-&-such in the root", yadda yadda yadda.

I'm relieved to hear such good things about the Pandora battery set up & am actively searching for someone who can help me aquire those items. In the meantime I'm wondering if there is anything I can practice with to become more comfortable with my PSP? Is there anything I can play around with that I can do that would make me less afraid of the whole PSP file system, etc.?

Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time :-)

[EDIT: Here are a few new/additional questions. I found someone who'll help me out with the Pandora's stuff. What is the minimum size memory stick that can be used? I read somewhere that a minimum of 128mb is required, but someone said that would be too small.

Can whatever MS I use be used as usual afterward? Can it be reformatted & returned to it's original state?

I've seen something about backing up the NAND. What does that mean & what are the benefits of doing that. Should that be done before I downgrade my PSP or can that be done afterwards?]

I think the most you can do if your psp isnt modded yet and you dont wanna mess around with it is look at different things and try to understand them on the forum once youve got a grasp on things maybe youll try custom firmware out. :)

Thanks canadajames for your reply :-)

I've added a few questions to my original post. If anyone could answer one or more I'd be really grateful.

128MB is enough, even a 64mb with FAT32 works, but 128MB is the least in recommendation.

If you go to the PSP FAQ and Guides Section of forums you'll see a guide on how to make a Pandora battery. (Here's the link ).

To play around and get comfortable (or to "practice"), it would be best to just check out the videos in youtube, and watch them throughfully, and watch it along with the guides on the forum to understand what to do.

EDIT: NAND is the backup of your flash memories, and some hardware settings. backuping up is recommended, but ONLY restore it when even pandora (the unbricker/flasher) doesnt work.

That's great to hear. Thanks Acerthief for your quick reply & helpful info. I didn't know YouTube would have anything along these lines. I'll have to go check that out.

Thanks again!

11/11/07 New questions. Get 'em while they're hot!

It's been awhile, so hopefully this won't be considered double-posting ^.^

I have a few more questions (& sure to have more as time goes on), so instead of "thread-bombing" the place it seems wiser if I just keep adding 'em to this thread of mine.

Here are my new questions:

RE: MS Bad Sectors
-- How do I check my memory stick for "bad sectors"?
-- Is there anything that can be done to fix any if found?
-- Under what circumstances would bad sectors in a MS be critically important?

RE: Pandora's battery & Magic Memory Stick
-- I have this, but it only downgrades to 1.5 How can I change it to include upgrade to 3.71 M33 (or even better 3.71 M33-3 including 1.5 kernal patch (^.^) ?
-- Any way to create this set-up to include the use of both 3.52 M33 and 3.71 M33?
-- When all the work is completed with the MS...is it possible to create a fully functional back-up of it? That way it wouldn't be necessary to go through every single step & procedure if you wanted to make another one.

RE: 3.71M33 Easy Installer download
-- Please, would anyone using Windows XP try getting this download to run? Let me know if you can get it to run. I keep getting an error & it won't open.

RE: MS Bad Sectors
1. Go to Start Menu/All Programs/Accessories/Command Prompt

2. Type
Code:
chkdsk X: /f
Just replace the X wih your PSPs drive letter.

RE: 3.71M33 Easy Installer download

You have already posted this in the PC Discussion Section. Please wait for someone to help you. I would, but it's a pretty big file for me to dl as I'm on dial-up.

If your going to use the pandora to downgrade it to 1.5 then you'll have to install 3.52 m33>3.52 m33-4>3.71 m33>3.71 m33-2. Or if you can just use the desparter comeriado v3 which in turn lets the "magic" stick install 3.72 m33-2 with the conjunction of a pandora battery. After you install cfw with pandora battery make sure you go to recovery menu by shuting off the psp completeing and holding R when booting it up. And go to Advanced>format flash1 and reset settings. without doing this when installing cfw on ofw psps it'll never bootup and end up rebooting over and over.

Is there anything I can do to fix bad sectors? Do bad sectors ever interfere with the full use of the memory stick?

Check out this guide http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3780HERE
I read from page 1 through page 8 in search of the answer to this question. Once I realized there were a total of 28 pages I gave up sifting & sorting through all of 'em & posted my question there. Sorry, maybe I should delete this question from this thread since I ended up doing that.

Sorry if asking the question again here was in poor form. I assumed that more people would notice this question in the PSP section of the forums than the PC section.

Thanks Roe-Ur-Boat for taking the time to give some answers to my questions. It's much appreciated ^.^
----------------- --------------------- --------------------- --------------------

If your going to use the pandora to downgrade it to 1.5 then you'll have to install 3.52 m33>3.52 m33-4>3.71 m33>3.71 m33-2.
Which is what I'm hoping to avoid by improving my existing Magic MS to include at least the 3.71 M33 upgrade. I'm all ears if you can tell me how to do that.

Or if you can just use the desparter comeriado v3 which in turn lets the "magic" stick install 3.72 m33-2 with the conjunction of a pandora battery.
Now that sounds promising. Would just adding dc v3 to my existing Magic MS do the trick? Or is there more to it than that?

After you install cfw with pandora battery make sure you go to recovery menu by shuting off the psp completeing and holding R when booting it up. And go to Advanced>format flash1 and reset settings. without doing this when installing cfw on ofw psps it'll never bootup and end up rebooting over and over.
That sounds like very good advice. Thanks for warning me about that.

Well, if you already have the pandoras batt. all you have to do is follow this part of the guide to downgrade and upgrade to 3.71M33-2
Usage: Unbrick / Downgrade / Restore Any PSP

Note: Provided you followed the instructions above, this process will work on any PSP, regardless of the hardware.

1. Boot the PSP with a magic memory stick and the Pandora Battery inserted.

2. You will be presented with a menu telling you to press X to install 3.71 M33-2. Press X.

3. Memory stick LED should begin flashing. Wait around 5-10 minutes, when the LED stops flashing the process is completed.

4. Now press X to complete the installation - it's imperative that you do this.

5. Boot up the PSP with a regular non-Pandora battery. You may be presented with a BSOD, but just press X or O to restore settings.

6. And that's it. You're now running 3.71 M33-2.

Added a new question to my original post. It's a bit long, so I won't repeat it right here.

In a nut shell I'm looking for a way to securely share large files (over 250MB & up to 1.7GB) that preferably does not involve any "p2p / peer to peer" or "torrent" type situations.

Thanks guys :-)

Microsoft's SkyDrive would be perfect for that (and it is free)

http://skydrive.live.com

No bandwidth limits, however I think you are limited to 500MB space.

www.mihd.com (max 200mb so it's suggested you zip the file and split it into 200mb parts). This site is by far the fastest in unlimited bandwidth.(allows dl accelerator). Uploading something over 100mb in size might cause the connection to timeout and thus causing the upload to fail. If your connection is really slow uploading is not really suggested.

I'm a bit mystified by "splitting" a large file. Looks like I'm wading into deeper waters than I realized.

What I want to do is to upload some video type of files. How would splitting a large video file end up being viewable / usable once received?
