Just what happens when a multi-million dollar company nears bankruptcy? As hard as this is to believe Squaresoft - creators of megahit Final Fantasy - weren't always as successful in the games industry as they are to date. In fact, they - like many other companies out there - were faced with financial trouble due to a lot of failed projects[...]

FF12 was awesome IMO. If it did brilliantly gameplay wise, then what makes it a disappointment? I'm surpised at FF13's return to turn based, I liked the FF12 system.
Ah well, let's hope FF Vs13 will be good.

FFXII sucked storywise... Gameplay was good but the main character was sorely lacking Charisma and that a no-no when you're playing an RPG. One of the principals of a non-custom character in an RPG, is that you sympathize with him, that it makes you WANT to be him. Not make you relish everytime he dies in a battle.

Glad to see it's up Kezra :)

And yeah, I definitely agree with your synopsis. Square certainly has been going through tons of changes over the years, and not all for the better. While personally I love FFXII, I can see how people don't. The series is changing, and some people don't like that.

Do you mean Vaan? If so, honestly, he wasn't really the main character. There wasn't one, come to think of it. Ashe, Balthier, and Basch all shared the spotlight and they all had something major to do with the plot.

"I'm Captian Basch!"

Honestly, I liked FFXII. Its storyline completely ripped off Star Wars though but I still liked it.

FFII though...I hated the levelling up system. Not because it was a bad system but because it was easily broken. By being a big emo and cutting yourself all the time, you could easily buff up your HP and defense while boosting your attack power. Very easily done at the start of the game and if you kept one enemy alive in a battle, you could just sit there buffing up your team. Awesome game though.

As for the article, amazing read. Well researched and a pleasure to read. As a sidenote, I agree on Versus XIII looking like the more interesting game.

Well yeah... But the story focuses on him, and he isn't that intersting at all... He really pissed me off and that made it very hard to play the game. Tidus [I'm using him because he's from the PS2 generation aswell] was a little lame but way better in terms of background story... and even in terms of charisma you ended up sympathizing with Tidus.

The only part about FFXII that I ever really hated is if I ever wanted to get back into it after a hiatus, It usually ended up being unbelievably confusing trying to figure out what I was supposed to do.

Kinda like Oblivion, but on a lesser degree.

Vs. seems to be hot on most peoples radar, but FFXIII being turn based is more then enough reason for me to want it, and probably will be what finally restores my interest in Final Fantasy Games. It took FFXII 20 minutes before I said fuck this game and traded it in.
And I don't like MMO's so FFXI wasn't even an option for me.
