Say goodbye to that lovely fresh manual smell with future PS3 and Xbox 360 efforts from Ubisoft. The company today announced that it is going green in an "environmental initiative" to ditch traditional paper manuals, replacing them with an in-game digital equivalent.

Look for Shaun White Skateboarding, due out this holiday season, to be the first title to ship without a physical manual[...]

<p>Can't be anything compared to the world consumption of trees caused by phone books and weekly mail ads. I don't understand why phone books and mail ads in most countries still aren't opt-in, only opt-out (in some).</p>
 
I agree.. the environmental impact of printing off game manuals must be rather insignificant. Saving on costs associated with printing the manuals was likely the motivating factor in Ubisoft's decision.

At any rate, it was bound to happen sooner or later. The future is in digital distribution.
