700 DD games at launch!

Eurogamer said:
Sony has announced that people with existing UMD games who want to upgrade to the new PSPgo, due out on 1st October, will receive three "free" downloads of full games.

This "PSPgo Rewards" programme involves registering a PSPgo on PSN, then logging on to PSN with your existing PSP with a UMD in the drive, which allows you to download a special PSPgo theme, which then presents you with a voucher via email for use on the PSPgo.

The voucher can be redeemed for three out of 17 available titles. We've asked Sony for the full list, but in the meantime the press release mentions Killzone: Liberation, SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3, WipEout Pure, Everybody's Golf, echochrome, Buzz!: Brain Bender, Buzz!: Master Quiz, LocoRoco and Patapon.

PSPgo Rewards will be available from 1st October until 31st March 2010 and is open to people with any existing PSP model and at least one UMD who buy and register a PSPgo during that timeframe.

The issue of how people with existing PSPs might "upgrade" their UMD collections to work on the download-only PSPgo has been debated a fair bit since the system's E3 unveiling, and the popular choice would seem to be a trade-in programme of some sort. We've asked Sony whether that's a possibility or whether PSPgo Rewards will be the final word on the subject.

The platform holder has previously said that it intends to support UMD despite the launch of PSPgo, with games due to be released both digitally and on the proprietary disc format for the foreseeable future.

Not too shabby... Too bad the PSPgo will flop... I'm getting the PSP-4000 :P

To be honest, anyone expecting full on UMD to DD conversion must not have thought it through. They would need to ask every publisher of every game if they were fine with it, and if a few say no, Sony can't do anything about it.

The PSPgo will still flop though Adiuvo, and here's why:

- Ridiculously high price point: Seriously? $250? You can get a Wii and a DSi for that price (almost);
- It's aimed at a very small audience: Let's face it, people love to have something to touch, and you can't touch digital;
- Digital angers retail: Retailers hate the Go because it hurts their profits, and if you mess with one of the cornerstones in the industry, you're in trouble;
- Ridiculous PSN Prices: Again, seriously?! Same price for retail and digital? Thanks but I'll stick to buying UMD's... Just got Persona this week for 37€ and it included a 2CD soundtrack;
- Society is not ready for digital: Parents and children alike aren't ready for digital... In a few years this might have worked, but for now it's way too soon.
- No Conversion Program: Too bad, you'll lose a LOT of sales there.

My prediction: October 1st 2010 will see the PSP-4000 be released at $199 with the combining of the Go's small size and the UMD.

While I don't think it'll do particularly well, I don't think it'll flop.

With the price, it's a non-issue for a lot of people, and the people who want a Wii in particular aren't the same people who want a Go. As for retailers, only one obscure retailer in the Netherlands have said they don't sell it. And PSN prices are cheaper?...

DD has been gaining in popularity for quite awhile as well.

Why would a publisher be against letting a person play the game they actually paid for?

If you paid for an Original PSP, and bought any UMD games what so ever, you're getting fucked. They're just asking to get pirated, because no person it going to be down with buying a PSP, and not being able to play their UMD games.

Sony should have had all this sorted out before the PSPgo even hit the drawing board.

Ah, that's why ;)

In the US they're a few dollars cheaper.

Also, 700 games at launch!

IGN: TGS 2009: Keynote Address

To be honest, the Go made me love my 3000 even more... 700 games at launch? Sounds like an empty promise, I'll believe it when I see it...

Hey Kaz, "Riiiiiidge Raaaaacer".

You missed the point.

I meant if people can get better or equal stuff cheaper, they will. Proven fact.

Also, Australia isn't getting the Go also. It might be a small setback, but it'll hurt nonetheless.

Plus (and please don't take offence) only an idiot would buy the same game on the same platform twice. You're just getting robbed. Big time.

Businesswise, Sony has been totally idiotic this gen.

@Enigma
To me, a Wii is definitely not equal to a PSP, and I already have a DS. Not everyone thinks the DS and Wii are 'equal.'

I'm fine with buying games twice, to be honest. If I like a game enough (let's say Daxter) to buy it twice, then I like the company enough to throw money at them as a thank you, so it doesn't bother me.

You say that like it's ok.

Oh heck no, it's not.

Okay... I explained myself not very clearly. What I meant is, no one is willing to pay $250 for a portable console. If it had phone proprieties, things would be different. But no... So it's a VERY risky move.

Look at the PS3, it didn't sell very well for the past years. Take it down to $299 and it sells 1 Million in 3 weeks...

See the pattern?

P.S. In Denmark the PS3 is at the same price as the PSPgo

The PSP was originally $250 when it came out, and it still sold decently enough.

I doubt the Go is going to sell amazingly, but given that it has a huge brand name behind it and a huge following, it's not going to flop.

It also came out when the Xbox 360 $400, and was still 8 months from release.

Now you can get a Wii, Xbox 360, or hell, even a DS AND iPhone for less, and a PS3 for $50 more.

That thing shouldn't be more than $150, and even at that price, I think Sony has squandered the PSP mindshare so much, that it wouldn't make a difference.

Also, this "Huge following" already has PSP's with games that Sony just told them they wont be able to play with the new system unless they buy them again.

Yes, but its direct rival sold twice as much... Because... It was cheaper.

People will always opt for the cheaper option, even if it's not quite as good. Remember, at the audience the PSP and the DS are aimed - children and teens, do not buy their console or their games. It's their parents.

Parents hate video games by nature (excluding enlightened ones), they are not willing to spend lots of money on a game console. Much less shell out more for games. Plus try to tell parents they have to buy games online. They'll freak out.

More than twice, actually. PSP is around 50 million, DS 110.

And if people always choose the cheaper option, then the PSP should have failed itself. It was at $250 until March of 2007, which is more than enough time for there to be no sales.
