Other than the fact that it's used when UMD auto-start is set to on and then you turn the psp on and it launches w/ BOOT.bin what other uses are there? Also what's diffrent about it than the eboot.bin?

BOOT.BIN an unencrypted version of the EBOOT.BIN - aside from that it's a byte by byte copy.

I'm not entirely sure why it's there. The official firmware only executes EBOOT.BIN. There's devkit units that execute BOOT.BIN, but those aren't made to run retail games so again there's really no explanation as to why BOOT.BIN is included on UMD discs.

Also, to prevent piracy back in the DevHook days, some developers replaced the BOOT.BIN with a blank file on UMD. So if the game was written under a firmware 3.0 development environment then DevHook running firmware 2.8 would not be able to decrypt the EBOOT.BIN.

My guess is that Sony's UMD creation tool, which is used during development, doesn't delete the BOOT.BIN files when building a game that is production ready. They didn't make this mistake with the PS3 - which only has a encrypted version of the EBOOT on retail discs.

so... the boot.bin is 100% irrelevant and is preferable to be deleted on umd iso backups to save space?

Yeah. It's not used at all so it can be deleted.
