what's the advantage of updating to 4.01 M33

Well...I am sort of outdated and haven't been in the field of the PSP for almost couple years. And now, there are lots of firmwares, customized firmwares released. I am still with the fat PSP and on 3.52 M33-2 firmware...My question is what the advantage we will have after updating to the latest 4.01 M33. What baffles me is that lots of people begin to use the Popsloader to play the PSX eboot on their PSP. With the 3.52 M33 customized firmware, don't you already have this function built-in? We can play PSX eboot without the popsloader though. I need somebody to enlighten me with this.

Popsloader is for SPECIFIC PSX games that only work on ONE firmware revision (not the one you have). Many people are idiots and think that popsloader is always needed and are using it when they don't need to. 4.01 M33 does indeed let you play PSX games without popsloader. If you find a game that doesn't work with the 4.01 version of pops, then you might want to use popsloader.

The main advantage of using the latest custom firmware is you generally have the latest firmware - you will be able to play all the new demos out from Sony to check if you would like to buy the full game. If you stick to something old like 3.52, you'll miss out on all the newest stuff.

Another advantage is that D_A makes advances in the custom firmware. You'll need to be on the latest to use things like the state saver add-on.

Since you're on the Phat, if you do update, be sure to install the 1.50 add-on so you can still play the old 1.50 based homebrew.

but in order to update to the latest firmware, you have to be on the 4.01 33 and then update again to 4.01 33-2. I heard that there would be a risk if you update twice at a time. However, I will give it a try to see what it is all about.

No, no NO.

first of all, you DON'T need to run updates like that... You can go straight to 4.01 M33-2 by putting the 4.01 eboot renamed to 401.PBP into the UPDATE folder. it's fine.. but you might need to be on 3.80 M33-4 or something to update to 4.01 M33-2

and popsloader is like this:

I played Strider 2 on 3.10, and 3.11 it worked fine. then after that it started to freeze at a certain point every time. So I had to use 3.11 POPS in order to continue to play it. every time a new firmware comes out, I test Strider 2, and sometimes it works better, but it remains broken.. so I still use 3.11 POPS to play it.
