Zombies

Crank

Crank it up!
So, discussion about zombies (in movies, stories, art, whatever) ITT.

In order to get the thread rolling, I'll provide you with a question:

What is the meanest type of zombie?

In my opinion, the meanest ones are found in 28 Days/Weeks Later. Screaming, fast running zombies creep the shit out of me. Just imagine walking on a field on a nice sunny day and then a horde of those running fuckers come screeching and running at you just because you happen to be alive. I know they're technically not zombies, since they don't aim to eat you (actually, if zombies eat people, how do they multiply in numbers if they just consume their prey fully?)

The fact that the disease thingy is very contagious makes it even scarier. Just some bodily fluid from a corpse on a mucus membrane is enough to infect you. Possibly painless zombification, yay.

Of course the classic slow ones are scary too, when there's a fuckload of them (~always). But the creep factor just increases exponentially with their moving speed and noise. :-P

yeah those runner zombies are mental even more if their wearing a nazi uniform :p

PSP Homebrew discussion?
Also, the runners work best for video games. Please see L4D for an example. Although the slow ones work good too (HL2, DR)

Yeah, I accidentally the whole thread in the wrong forum. I suck :-)

Thanks, Abe :-)

This is a subject I feel unusually strongly about. Runner zombies can get down on both knees and suck my dick.
Why? Well...
1) The point in zombies is that the enemy is a mindless, shambling version of you. You don't get the time to drink up the scene if the zombies are pelting it after you.

2) It's the unstoppable horde that makes zombies unique and scary. Sure they're slow but they'll never stop coming. If they run then what's the point in calling them zombies, they're just blood lusting dudes. You don't get the same sense of being slowly backed into a corner.

I hate running zombies. Especially ones in the remake of Dawn of the Dead that can traverse pipes like monkey bars, them bitches aren't zombies.

I prefer the running ones as long as they are in big open areas e.g. L4D. Slow for close corners e.g. Dead Space

LoL you can't choose to your liking  xD

Now I don't feel as strongly about it, but I agree Zombies should not run.
One thing that bothered me abut Left 4 Dead is that the zombies are trying to fist fight you. Aren't they supposed to be trying to bite you?

Not to take anything way from (old school) RE and L4D, but Dead Rising had it done right.

I agree that hordes of slow zombies are far more frightening than fast zombies. You can kill a few of the undead, but there are still thousands of them. With runners, it only works with a handful, otherwise there would be no realistic method of escape, especially from thousands of fast monsters trying to kill you.

they'll never stop coming

I have that problem with chicks, too. ;) Seriously though, aside from the prospect of having Zombies run or walk, I like the issue that Craig Fairfax pointed out;

I agree, I definately think so. I like how the Resident Evil movies potray 'The Infection'; Whereas, once bitten, survivors know their own demise. And it's just looming, theres nothing they can do about it. I remember one of the earlier Resident Evil games on PS2 had this feature where, once bitten or scratched by a zombie, your infection percentage would start going up. It gradually increases over time, accelerating as it does; at 100%, game over. I think this is what Zombies are all about; The feeling of hopelessness, and having no control. The idea that your body is no longer your own. Genetic mutation, and all that crap.

Still, whilst I liked the ideology behind the system I described in Resident Evil, it was only good in theory. I remember getting really frustrated when I began to realise I didn't have any chance of finishing the mission, because I simply didn't have time. It really pissed me off. I still think its a good concept, but maybe just for movies and such. As for video games, I like Dead Rising's approach.

The games were Resident Evil: Outbreak and Resident Evil: Outbreak File #2

I actually should pick this book up, I've heard it reccomended a lot.
And, yes. Dead Rising is the best video game ever to feature zombies.

Yup, that game rocks.

I actually picked up "Patient Zero" by Jonathan Maberry last week. Haven't had a chance to read it yet, but it seems like a nice zombie book. The back cover has a quote:

"When you have to kill the same terrorist twice in one week, then there's either something wrong with your skills or something wrong with your world. And there's nothing wrong with my skills."
Basically it's about terrorists unleashing a zombie virus and then people trying to fight it. Sounds promising enough :-)

i do like a classic with a twist:

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

yep thats jane austins classic with zombies xD
