Famed iPhone hacker George “GeoHot” Hotz — father of the widely-used jailbreak hack — has thrown in the towel. Hotz delivered the news of his departure on his now-defunct Twitter account earlier today, noting that “It was a cool ride, and I’ve learned a lot about a lot. Perhaps one of these days i’ll do a more formal goodbye.”

Apart from his well-publicized stint with hacking the iPhone, Hotz also dabbled in the PS3 hacking scene[...]

Good riddance I say.

Because of him PS3 users lost OtherOS, then he had the nerve to promise to bring it back and never did.

Because of Sony PS3 users lost OtherOS. You come off as a huge hypocrite imo.

Sony only took it off because he exploited it. As far as I'm concerned he's still at fault.

Why am I a hypocrite? o_O

I think what happened was that perhaps both Apple and Sony sent him Cease and Desist letters threatening legal action, which caused him to leave the scene.

He had a good run, and will be rembered as the guy who broke the PS3, unless this is a fake retirement, like what when Dark_Alex (remember him?) retired, and then secretly resurfaced as M33. I'm just a little disappointed he didn't manage to get any further with the PS3.

Who's this Dark_Alex you speak of?

Maybe because you're knocking him for doing a very similar thing to what you were proud of showing off on another platform?

I don't remember the timeline for this. Is this actually right?

Yeah, first he announced the exploit he found through OtherOS, awhile later, Sony removed OtherOS in 3.21, Geohot promised a CFW that would include it, and even showed a video of "3.2100" running on a PS3 which had OtherOS.

Got it. Thanks. I was at school at the time, so I wasn't watching PS3 news very closely.

What Geohot did had much larger consequences since a PS3 hack was never demonstrated. With the PSP it really didn't matter for obvious reasons.

Regarding him leaving, it's a bit sad, but given his attitude I don't really mind at all.

We never hurt the PSP platform in any way, nor do we intend to. Because of Mr. I-put-my-photo-in-a-jailbreak-and-I-can-hack-the PS3, we lost OtherOS which was a neat feature and gained NOTHING in return.

Don't not compare Typhoon to that prick, we never promised anything, and we did what FreePlay was doing at the time, showing off exploits just because.

That's most likely not the case. I haven't heard of Sony or Apple doing anything similar with other "hackers". He's still just a little kid and I'm glad to see him leave personally.

I'm pretty sure no one has demanded anything in the PS3 scene, PS3 is filled will a more mature crowd if anything, all the 'kiddies' are on Xbox, I don't see the PS3 scene becoming a problem.

You've never been to any all PS3 forum, have you? Both sides are bad, and if the PS3 gets hacked I bet most PSP people will head on over to that. I can't imagine most jumping brands.

i think he is being paid BIG TIME by SONY and Apple, that is why he is quitting the scene of hacking and promise some good job position.
